You’ve negotiated the price, settled the trade and shaken hands. Then you’re walked into a small office to “do the paperwork.” That’s the finance and insurance office, F&I or “the box,” and at many dealerships it’s one of the most profitable rooms in the building. A $2,500 product bundle rolled into a 72-month loan shows up on the menu as roughly $40 a month. Tired buyers sign it without ever seeing the full price.
One thing worth knowing now: if you have a pre-approval from your bank or credit union, mention it at the credit application, before any payment is quoted. It sets the rate to beat before anything gets built around you. Below: each step in order, from the credit app to the menu to the contract, the numbers to check before you sign, what “spot delivery” means when your financing isn’t actually final, and the exact words to use at each step.
