Every finance office knows the most powerful question in car sales: “What monthly payment are you looking for?” Give a number and the deal gets built backward to hit it. Price, rate, term, trade value and add-ons all become dials the dealer can turn while the payment stays right where you asked. Two offers can show the same $600 payment and be thousands of dollars apart in total cost.

The payment matters; you have to afford it. But it’s the least useful number for comparing deals, because almost any payment can be hit by stretching the term or burying cost somewhere else. Compare the out-the-door price, the amount financed, the APR and the term instead. Below: the five numbers that matter, how they trade off, three offers on one car worked out, the worksheet with a filled-in example, where hidden costs show up, and a note on the 2025–2028 car-loan interest deduction.

Upload the dealer’s worksheet or buyer’s order and a FMYCAR advisor validates every line (price, trade, fees, rate, term, add-ons) and tells you exactly what to fix before you sign.
