How this calculator works
- Taxable amount = selling price + add-ons + doc fee (if taxable) − trade value (if your state gives a trade-in credit) − rebates (if your state taxes after rebates).
- Out-the-door price = selling price + doc fee + add-ons + title and registration + sales tax − rebates.
- Amount financed = out-the-door price − (trade value − payoff) − cash down. If the trade and cash down are more than that, the difference is due back to you.
Assumptions and limits
- Tax rules vary by state. Some give no trade-in tax credit, many tax the price before manufacturer rebates, and doc-fee caps differ. Use the switches to match your state, and check your state’s revenue department or DMV site.
- Title and registration are an estimate until the dealer or DMV quotes them.
Out-the-door price: questions
What fees are in an out-the-door price?
Usually the doc (documentation) fee, title and registration, sales tax, and any dealer add-ons you accepted. Ask for the out-the-door price in writing and match each line to this calculator.
Does a trade-in lower sales tax?
In most states the trade-in value is subtracted before sales tax is calculated, which is why the switch starts on. A few states do not give that credit. Check your state’s rules.
Is the out-the-door price negotiable?
The selling price, add-ons and often the doc fee are negotiable; tax and government title fees are not. Negotiate the out-the-door number, not the monthly payment.
