What “Payoff amount” means
Your statement balance is principal at a point in time. A payoff quote adds interest accrued up to a chosen payoff date, and sometimes small fees. Most lenders give a 10-day payoff with a per diem (daily interest) figure, so the dealer or buyer knows exactly what to send.
On a simple-interest loan, the payoff changes every day.
How it shows up at the dealership
When you trade in a car with a loan, the dealer calls your lender or uses an online payoff system. Make sure the payoff on the worksheet matches the lender’s quote, and that the dealer pays it promptly; you remain responsible until it’s paid.
If you’re upside down, the payoff is also the number that tells you how much negative equity you’d carry into your next car. Compare it with your outside offers before you go to the dealer.
Worked example · illustrative numbers, not a quote
From balance to payoff
| Statement balance | $18,240 |
| Per diem interest | $3.20/day |
| 10 days of interest | + $32 |
| 10-day payoff | $18,272 |
If the dealer takes longer than 10 days to pay, the amount owed increases. Keep making payments until you see a $0 balance.
What to do
- Request a 10-day payoff in writing from your lender before visiting the dealer.
- Check the payoff number on the buyer’s order matches.
- Confirm with the lender that the loan is paid and the lien released.
What to say
