What “Payment packing” means
Payment packing works because most buyers check whether a payment fits their budget, not whether it matches the math. If the salesperson quotes $571 when the agreed price and rate produce $477, the finance office has about $94 a month of “room” for products.
The products are then presented as “only a few dollars a day” or “already in your payment.”
How it shows up at the dealership
It starts early: “What payment are you looking for?” A packed quote on the worksheet then gets a menu of products in the finance office that fits under it. The fix is to know what the payment should be before you walk in.
Worked example · illustrative numbers, not a quote
Catching a packed payment
| Agreed amount financed | $28,000 |
| Rate and term | 7% for 72 months |
| What the payment should be | $477/mo |
| Payment quoted | $571/mo |
| Hidden room | $94/mo · about $6,750 over the loan |

What to do
- Calculate your expected payment before the finance office.
- Ask for the amount financed, APR and term behind any payment quote.
- Ask for every product to be removed and priced separately.
What to say
“At $28,000 and 7% for 72 months the payment is $477. Your number is $571. Please take out everything that isn’t the car, tax and fees, then show me each product with its own price.”
Also called: packing the payment.
