Instant cash offer

A cash offer for your car from an online buyer or dealer, based on information you enter, usually valid for about a week and subject to an inspection. It’s a quick way to set a floor before trading in.

What “Instant cash offer” means

Services like CarMax, Carvana, Kelley Blue Book’s Instant Cash Offer network and many dealer groups will make a written offer after you enter your VIN, mileage and condition. Offers are typically valid for around seven days and are confirmed or adjusted when someone inspects the car.

Most can pay off your loan directly, and some pick the car up. The tax credit you get from trading in doesn’t usually apply to a straight sale, so compare carefully.

How it shows up at the dealership

An outside offer is your best negotiating tool. Many dealers will match or beat a written offer, especially brand dealers short on used inventory.

If the buyer finds something you didn’t disclose at inspection, the offer can drop on the spot. Ask what condition items commonly lower the number, and bring your title or payoff details so the sale can be completed the same day.

Worked example · illustrative numbers, not a quote

Three offers, side by side

CarMax$14,300
Carvana$14,800
Brand dealer #2$15,100
Your dealer’s first trade offer$13,200
Floor to negotiate from$15,100

Be accurate about condition; a damaged bumper you didn’t mention will lower the offer at inspection.

What to do

  • Get two or three offers in the same week; values move.
  • Describe condition honestly and upload photos if asked.
  • Bring the best one, printed, to the dealership.

What to say

“I have $15,100 in writing, good until Saturday. Match it and I’ll trade here; if not, I’ll sell to them and bring cash.”

Also called: instant offer, online offer.
