Down payment

Cash you pay up front toward a car purchase, which reduces the amount you borrow. A larger down payment lowers the payment and interest and helps you avoid owing more than the car is worth.

What “Down payment” means

Your down payment is the money you put in at signing, separate from a trade-in. It reduces the amount financed, which reduces the payment, the interest and the risk of negative equity. A common guideline is 10 to 20% on a purchase, but the right amount depends on your rate, savings and the car.

On a lease, money down is called a cap cost reduction and works differently; putting a lot down on a lease is usually a bad idea.

How it shows up at the dealership

Dealers often ask how much you’re putting down early, then use it to make the payment work. Settle the price first. A large down payment never makes a high price a good deal.

Worked example · illustrative numbers, not a quote

$4,000 down vs $0 down on a $28,000 loan, 7%, 72 months

$0 down: finance $28,000$477/mo · $6,371 interest
$4,000 down: finance $24,000$409/mo · $5,461 interest
Down payment saves$68/mo · about $910 interest

Keep an emergency fund. A big down payment that leaves you with no cushion is not a win.

What to do

  • Decide your down payment before the visit and don’t raise it under pressure.
  • Pair a low down payment with GAP from your insurer or credit union, not the dealer.
  • On a lease, keep due-at-signing to first month and fees where possible.

What to say

“I’m putting $4,000 down regardless. Let’s agree on the price first, then I’ll show you how the rest is financed.”

Also called: cash down, money down.
